What the job involves
Nelson Plumbing & Heating is a Salford based plumbing and heating company covering Greater Manchester. Our engineers handle everything from a leaking tap or a blocked waste through to burst pipes, hot water cylinders and complete bathroom fits. Every job is quoted before we start, so the price we tell you is the price you pay.

What a plumber covers, and what needs a gas engineer
These get used interchangeably and they are not the same qualification.
Plumbing work is water: pipework, taps, toilets, showers, cylinders, leaks, tanks, drainage inside the property and the pipework that connects it all together. No gas registration is required to do it.
Anything burning gas is different. Boilers, gas fires, gas cookers and gas pipework can only legally be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the registration is specific: an engineer qualified on boilers is not automatically qualified on cookers or commercial appliances.
Unvented hot water cylinders need their own qualification as well, because a sealed system storing hot water is a pressure vessel and it is dangerous when it is wrong.
The practical version: a plumber can fit your bathroom, but moving the boiler in it is gas work. Ask which registrations the person doing your job actually holds rather than assuming the company holding them is the person turning up.
The jobs that cost more than people expect, and why
A dripping tap is sometimes a washer and sometimes a seized cartridge in a mixer that is no longer made. The second one ends with a new tap.
A leaking toilet is usually the flush valve rather than anything dramatic, but a slow leak into the pan can waste a startling amount of water before anyone notices.
Low shower pressure is often not the shower. It can be the incoming main, a partially closed valve, scale, or a gravity system that never had the head for it.
Moving a toilet means moving soil pipe, and soil pipe needs fall. That is the difference between a plumbing job and a building job.
Old pipework in Manchester's Victorian housing stock throws up lead, steel and compression joints on the same run. Work that looks like an hour becomes half a day when what is behind the wall is not what anyone expected.
An estimate given without seeing the job is a guess. A fixed price given after seeing it is a quote, and that is what you want.
Getting a quote that holds
Ask for the price in writing, and ask what happens if the job turns out to be different once things are opened up. Every honest tradesman has been wrong about what was behind a wall. The distinction that matters is whether they tell you before carrying on, or afterwards on the invoice.
Ask who is doing the work, whether materials are included, and how long the work is guaranteed for. Those three answers separate most firms from each other faster than price does.
