Why gas fires get missed
Most people book the boiler service and stop there. The gas fire sits in the living room unserviced for years, and it is the appliance where that matters most.
It burns in the room you sit in. A modern boiler is room sealed, taking its air from outside and sending everything back out through the flue. An open gas fire draws air from the room and vents up a chimney that can be blocked by a bird's nest or years of soot. If that flue stops clearing, the products of combustion have nowhere to go.
The warning signs are easy to dismiss. Black marks above the fire. A lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one. Condensation on the windows while it is running, or a smell when it first lights. Any of those is a reason to stop using it and have it looked at.
A carbon monoxide alarm is not a substitute for a service. It is the last line of defence, not the check. You still want one in the room, and you still want the appliance tested every year.
Repairs: what usually goes wrong
Most gas fire faults come down to a short list, and most are repairable.
The pilot lights but will not stay lit. Nearly always the thermocouple. It is the safety device that proves the flame is there, and when it weakens it shuts the gas off a few seconds after you let go of the button.
The pilot will not light at all. Usually a blocked pilot injector, which is a clean rather than a part.
It lights, then cuts out after a while. Often the oxygen depletion sensor doing exactly what it is designed to do, which means the real problem is ventilation or the flue, not the fire.
Sooting and yellow flames. Frequently the ceramic coals or logs put back in the wrong positions after a clean. They are laid out to a set pattern for a reason, and moving them changes how the fire burns.
We diagnose the fault and quote a fixed price before any work starts, so you are not agreeing to an open-ended bill.
Landlords and gas fires
If you let a property with a gas fire in it, the fire is part of your annual duty, not an optional extra.
Every gas appliance goes on the CP12. Boiler, fire, cooker and hob. A record covering the boiler alone does not discharge the duty.
Decommissioned fires still need dealing with properly. A fire that is capped off and no longer in use should be recorded as such by the engineer, not simply ignored.
We do landlord gas safety checks and gas fire servicing on the same visit across Greater Manchester, which is usually one appointment for the tenant rather than two.
