THE WORK
What the job involves
When a boiler is beyond economic repair, we replace it. We size the replacement to the property rather than simply matching what was there, confirm what the existing system will take, and agree a fixed price before any work begins.
What's included
Honest advice on repair versus replace
Correct sizing for the property, not a like-for-like guess
Fixed price agreed before we start
Old boiler removed and taken away
When a boiler replacement is the right call
Replacing a boiler that still runs feels wasteful, and sometimes it is. These are the situations where it usually is not.
Parts have gone obsolete. Once a manufacturer stops making a component, a fault that would have been an hour's work becomes a search. Some models reach a point where the next failure ends it, whatever anyone does.
It is non condensing. Older boilers vent heat out of the flue that a condensing appliance recovers. That is a cost on every bill, not just when something breaks.
The repairs have become a pattern. One component failing is bad luck. Three in two winters is a boiler telling you something.
The house has changed. An extra bathroom, an extension or a loft conversion changes the demand. A boiler that was correctly sized ten years ago may not be now.
It is in the wrong place. Replacement is the moment to move it, because the disruption is already happening. Doing it later as a separate job costs far more.
What a straight swap actually involves
A like for like boiler replacement in the same position is the least disruptive version of this work, but it is not simply unbolting one and hanging another.
The existing system gets cleaned, because a new appliance on old debris will not last. The gas supply is checked against the new boiler's requirement, which is not always the same as the old one's. The flue is replaced rather than reused, since it is matched to the appliance. Condensate needs a route to a suitable drain, and on older properties that route sometimes does not exist yet.
Then the new boiler is commissioned properly: gas rate set, combustion analysed, readings recorded, Benchmark completed. Finally the work is notified under Building Regulations and the guarantee registered in your name.
What replacement does not fix on its own
Worth knowing before you spend, because a new boiler gets blamed for these afterwards.
Cold spots in radiators are usually sludge or balancing, not the boiler. If the system is not cleaned properly the new appliance inherits the problem.
Poor mains water pressure limits what a combi can deliver. A new boiler cannot create flow that is not coming into the house.
Rooms that never get warm are often undersized radiators or heat loss through the fabric of the building.
Ancient controls waste the efficiency you just paid for. A modern boiler with a mechanical timer and no thermostatic valves is running blind.
An honest quote should tell you which of these apply to your house before the work, not after.
